What holds these two beliefs – the desire to cut public spending, the free-market fundamentalism on one side, and the Christian faith on the other – together? It is certainly true that, in today’s political reality in the United States, the two often find themselves in a coalition; but is it not worth asking why a pious man would dream of slashing welfare programs and firing government workers?
