Born and raised during the Great Depression in Salisbury, NC, Leigh was the only one of seven children to survive child hood illness. He was later voted Prom King of the Philip T. Westland High School. He is one of the worlds most prominent map makers and has seen action in two major American wars. Although he is a successful business man, fluent in Japanese, he claims his best days were spent working the register at Mr. Swirlees.
Leigh was married at 19 to his childhood sweetheart, Ann, who would later die of malaria in the jungles of Africa. Together they raised one son, who went on to study medicine at B.U. and co-produce The Cosby Show. Leigh O’Connor now 81 is working on his memoirs in a quiet cabin in the mountains of Montana. When asked if he’s led a good life, he merely smiled and said, ” …isn’t being alive ‘good’ enough?”

Leigh O’Connor is a hero and my very best friend.

The Men’s Locker Room at the Gym is Filthy

When I walked into the locker room at Evergreen fitness the other day, I was looking directly into the butt-hole of a fat man bending over. I think he was drying off his pale, gout-ridden feet. As my eyeballs bled I wondered if it would be the same experience to stare into the sun. His [...]

Of Peacocks, Yurts, and Boats

The female Indian Blue Peafowl is referred to as a Peahen; the male, a Peacock. They are between 35 and 50 inches tall and can weigh up to 13 pounds. The male’s tail feathers or “train” can be as long as five feet and sport a variety of colors including blue, green, red and gold. [...]

A Word From Washington State

[Editor's Note: Despite what the icon reads to the right, this post is actually written by Leigh O'Connor, our intrepid reporter who recently moved from Providence, RI to the middle of the woods in Washington State. He ain't got no Internet where he's at, but he recently filed this post from a local library. Enjoy!]

A Table for Mike

My friend Mike wanted a table that could be moved around easily. He lives on the forth floor of an apartment in Queens. He may need to move again and wanted a table that one person could carry. So I came up with this design.

The legs and skirt are made from mahogany. The table top [...]

Icon

This is a hand-made bronze hammer. It’s mounted on a Mahogany base, with pine inlays and pine pegs. The hammer is fixed in that position, with a welded bolt just at the base of the handle. For a finish, I gave it a white patina.

The Pines of Rome

I work with this guy named Rick Prior. He runs his own carpentry business and we’ve sort of joined forces to take on projects for the summer. Prior started out as a mason on Block Island, and eventually went to school for some kind of Historical Preservation concentration, but only after working on a farm [...]

There’s No Such Thing As Fate

I opened the door, sat down, pulled out the choke on this nineteen sixty-something BMW with a rusted out floor, put the key into the ignition, turned it and waited. After a few minutes the choke settled into its three-quarter position and the car idled at a steady “chugga-chug”. I put it into first and [...]

Graphing Up The Information

In an age where owning music is just a click away, Beck drops some ill-shit that makes a brother wanna go out and buy some albums. I know his newest record, The Information (iTunes, Amazon) came out a while ago, but I’m always just a little bit behind. I’ve only owned it for a month [...]

How I Set Kyle Up With a Joke

(And how he, in turn, inadvertently got me to write something about him,and about good music for the just-passed holiday)
It all started earlier in the week when I was reading one of the comments that another contributor to this site had written. The thread of conversation had to do with my work as a gas-pumping [...]

I’m a man.

That’s right, I’m a goddamn man. I have all man parts and a ridiculously hairy chest. It’s so fucking hairy I actually trim it down every couple of months. Actually, there was this Greek guy that worked in a roast-beef shop in Marblehead when I was younger. He was so hairy that his facial hair [...]
