Hey Folks,
Well, I mentioned the other day that I was getting the itch to change the site a little bit. While my real itch is to re-design the site completely, I won’t have time to do that until at least November. So, in the meantime, I figured I’d do the next best thing and rearrange the colors of the current design.
The inspiration for what you’re looking at came from the color variations that maple leaves go through during the Fall. I found this “color wheel” on Wikipedia, and thought I’d try to mirror it a little a bit:

I may end up tweaking some things here and there, as I discover elements I’ve screwed up or simply missed altogether. But I think this is going to be the look of the site until I can get to the major re-design.
As always, feel free to leave your complaints and suggestions in the comments section of this post.
Thanks,
The Management
PS: If you want to play with the palette, I’ve created a page over on ColourLovers.com where you can download it.

I really dig the colors man, and thanks for setting up the palette on ColourLovers. It’s nice to have the hex codes to play with. Looks like with the different background color, there needs to be more side padding to clear the text, and it looks like new logo time! Plus it could use more of the green as highlights, in my opinion. Can’t wait to start working on this with you!
i like the colors… - although… - i’m not into the colors with this current layout… - hurry up november…
Eliot - do you mean padding on the right sidebar?
As for “new logo time”…anyone who wants to take a shot at designing us a new logo…I’d love to see it.
the right side more than the left, but with such contrasting colors, i would think about 20 extra pixels on each side wouldn’t go amiss. i think i’ll wait till i get myself a real version of photoshop before trying my hand at a new logo, but matching the color scheme would be a good start…
The logo does match the color scheme.
“Fluid Imagination” and the tag-line both use the yellow in the scheme (see the “Post A Comment” text above for another example of this color).
The man uses the dark green in the scheme, and the swirling circle uses the brighter green. I didn’t include the bright green on the ColourLovers palette because I couldn’t figure out how to add more than five colors, but if you look at the color wheel of leaves up above, the bright green is at 9 o’clock.
post a Creative Brief and Brand strategy for FI and let the public submit some new logo ideas. And the winner can get a prize or something.
I must be getting the old logo, then, because it looks just the same as it ever did. Weird. Your description sounds nice, though.
Creative Brief and Brand Strategy? You’ve been visiting this site since it started in 2004. Take everything you know about it, and put it in a logo.
If you’re not Shawn and you want to design a new logo, use the Tag Cloud widget or the Categories drop-down menu to browse through our archives, then take what you learn, and put it in a logo.
And the prize? You get to add “Logo Designer” to your resume, and “Fluid Imagination” to your portfolio.
With that direction, lets just say it wasn’t easy to please the “client”. I’ve made logos before for FI and the current one is my creative…some direction would be nice… :-)
I’ll leave this one up to Adam. It’s time he started pulling his weight around here.
Eliot,
Try hitting shift-refresh on your browser, or clearing your cache.
fall colors are icky. this is like a bad jc penny’s commercial.
and i’m not just hatin cause i’m from the northwest where we go from a nice summer to two days of fall and bam, it’s winter. i appreciate the colors. just on leaves. like real leaves.
love the attempt though, i’m excited for november!
yeah… - i’m starting to think that the orange is a little too much… - i would go with a much lighter orange… - even a light beige or a light tan… - this is too oompa loompa for me… - it’s like that hamilton guy smudged his face all over kyle’s programming…
Thanks for the call-out. I prefer a plain white background with black text. I also miss the old, old Logo (with the big sweeping lines coming from the F in Fluid and I in imagination…..)
but that’s just me, I’m always really distracted every time you make a change and it takes me a few weeks to adjust. I’m never digging the colors or any new layouts. Once I’m comfortable or used to a site, I never want it to change, its like a used pair of slippers.
