Fluid Imagination: A Look Way Back

So, I was doing a little research on the Internet Wayback Machine, and while I was there, I decided to take a look at our little blog. What I found was a small collection of the various designs we’ve used here on Fluid Imagination. It didn’t have every iteration of the site, but it had a decent snapshot. I got a bit of a kick out of it, so I thought you folks might too. Take a look.

November 2004
I launched Fluid Imagination in August of 2004 with a post entitled, “Another Point of View,” a mix of fiction and philosophy that I had written in response to a class on Feminism. We weren’t on WordPress like we are now. We were on TypePad, which limited our design potential. But even so, I did the best I could, and what we had was this:

The second design we had was much the same as the first, with the only difference being the addition of a third column.

February 2006
Sick of the design limitations of TypePad, I made the jump to WordPress in September of 2005. The Wayback Machine doesn’t have a copy of the first design we were using, but if you want to take a look at what an un-modified version of the theme was, you can visit the site for K2. But too many people were using K2 and I wanted something a little cooler, which is when I installed Squible.

Summer 2006
I was a big fan of Squible, but it didn’t play well with YouTube, and as you all know, we like our YouTube videos here on Fluid Imagination. That’s when I made the switch to the Tarski theme. Again, the Wayback Machine doesn’t have a copy, but you can see an unmodified design at the Tarski site.

Tarski was a decent design, but being a Gemini, I need to switch things up every once in a while, so at the end of the summer, I changed to the theme to PlainTxt Blog, which I think may still be the most beloved of all the themes we’ve used.

October 2006
While PlainTxt was great, I wanted something a little more exciting than text on a white background, so in October, I switched to Fluidity. This one might have been my favorite over the years.

Spring 2007
After Fluidity had run its course, we made the switch to a theme called iTheme:

And I think that was it. After iTheme, I dallied around with one or two others, but finally settled on the one you’re looking at now, which is called Moo-Point.

The reason I bring all this up? I’m starting to get the itch. I have a couple of more weeks of serious grad school homework, but come the end of October, I’m going to have slightly more time than I do now, and one of the first things I’m gonna try to do is design my own WordPress theme from scratch (with help a little help from Eliot). Wish me luck!

    the memories… - the sweet sweet memories…

just stay away from the blinking pink text and the introductory techno music and you’ll be fine…
