I don’t think Obama hit a home run or anything, but he seemd 90000x more presidential than did McCain.
We were watching it on CNN, and they had a little thing at the bottom of the screen that (at least on West Wing) are called Dial Groups. It’s a real time measure of how Democrats, Republicans, and Independents are reacting to what the candidate is saying.
Whenever McCain was talking, the Republican line was way up in the 80% area, and BOTH the Independents and Dem lines were usually below 50%.
When Obama was talking, ALL THREE were usually somewhere in the 60%-70% range.
So what I took away from that was Obama’s ability to attract more Independents AND more Republicans.
I mean, let’s face it. Hard-core Dems and liberals are gonna vote for Obama. Hard-core Repubs are gonna vote for McCain. It’s the candidate who can snag the most Independents and a steal a few from the other side of the aisle who is going to win.
And according to those Dial Groups, that was hands-down Obama.
Not to mention the fact that McCain simply could not bring himself to make eye-contact with Obama. He wouldn’t even look at him. Not even during the post-debate handshake. I thought that revealed so much about his pettiness and anger.

I object on the pettiness and anger, maybe he knows he was overmatched and could not bear to look at the guy. Or the camera.
Oh and super job by the house republicans today. :(
While I haven’t seen the debate yet, I have been reading and talking about it with various people, and the impression I’ve got is that if you were listening to the debates on the radio, McCain came out on top. If you were watching the debate on TV, then Obama was the stronger of the two. Maybe it was McCain’s repetition of the ‘ignorance’ of Obama and Obama’s less-than-equally aggressive voice that did it, but I feel like there was no clear-cut result from the first debate, and that disappoints me. There’s still a tough fight ahead, apparently!
