An In-Depth Look At Obama’s Economic Policies

From NY Times Magazine’s Barack Obama, A Free-Market-Loving, Big-Spending, Fiscally Conservative Wealth Redistributionist: “‘My core economic theory is pragmatism,’ [Obama] said, ‘figuring out what works.’ This, of course, is not the whole story. Invoking pragmatism doesn’t help the average voter much; ideology, though it often gets a bad name, matters, because it offers insight into how a candidate might actually behave as president. I have spent much of this year trying to get a handle on what is sometimes called Obamanomics and have come away thinking that Obama does have an economic ideology. It’s just not a completely familiar one. Depending on how you look at it, he is both more left-wing and more right-wing than many people realize.”

I just heard a clip where Obama talks about how he’s pro-choice. Bummer. He’s also super religious. Are there any other candidates out there?

Whoops. I meant he’s pro-LIFE…and that’s the bummer. Another dude making decisions for women in the name of god.

…he’s also said he’s against gay marriage. Real progressive.

Um…I’d like to see that Pro-Life clip. Because he spoke to a church full of evangelicals Saturday night and told them he was Pro-Choice. So could you send me that clip? ‘Cause I’m pretty sure it’s bullshit.

And while he is personally against gay marriage, he does not support any legislative maneuvers on the issue. Unlike McCain, Obama doesn’t think we should codify his personal feelings into law.

Think of it terms of the abortion debate. Those who are pro-life want to enact a law to make abortions illegal. Those who are pro-choice think that one’s stance on the issue is a matter of persona choice. But they’re not in favor of more abortions. As Democrats since Bill Clinton have said, “I want to make abortions safe, legal, and rare.”

On the gay marriage debate, Obama personally believes that marriage is between a man and a woman, but he is progressive enough to say that his personal belief shouldn’t be forced upon every American everywhere. He leaves the issue up to the states, which is to say, he thinks you and your neighbors should have more say over your marriage laws than any one else in the country.

You may not agree with his stance, but you have to give him credit for at least letting people make their own decisions.

McCain, on the other hand, has said that he’s a Federalist on this issue (i.e., leave it up to states), but he also said that if the U.S. Supreme Court said his state of Arizona had to recognize the gay marriages in Massachusetts, then he’d be in favor of a constitutional amendment defining marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

But I actually clicked on this article not to respond to Leigh but to show you guy this quote from about four or five pages into the article:

“For the bottom 80 percent of the population — those households making $118,000 or less — McCain’s various tax cuts would mean a net savings of about $200 a year on average. Obama’s proposals would bring $900 a year in savings. So for most people, Obama is the tax cutter in this campaign.”

Just wanted y’all to see that, so when all those McCain commercials about Obama being a president who would raise your taxes, you’d know that his tax increases won’t effect the 80% of the population that you most likely found yourself in.

Okay…I just finished the LONG article (eight friggin’ pages! of Internet reading!), and I gotta say, all of you should really read it. It’s very well written, and it gives pretty good insight into the economic policies of the man who could be our next president.

I really hope this same writer does a similar article on McCain.

Kyle, it was probably the same speech from Saturday night. I heard a clip on the radio this week. His stance didn’t sound as defined as you’re making it sound. Didn’t he talk about getting the proper information out there so that women could make the right decision. Are women misinformed and making the wrong decisions? Or did he actually say, “I’m pro-choice”? If so then the clip I heard was definitely edited. I’m sure you can find it faster then I can.

About his stance on marriage; it’s lame. If you’re asking me who’s stance I like better McCains or Obamas. The answer is Obama’s. But to hear him back petal about his personal thoughts means he’s trying to play to both crowds…and it means we’re getting another super religious president either way. Which sucks.

Don’t get me wrong if my options are between these two for who represents our nation better, I’d say the young black man, not the old rich white man.

But I just feel like I’m all set this time around, anyway. I’ve been done with politics for awhile, it’s horse shit. None of these people really stand up for anything, everyone plays it safe. How about a real leader for a change.

Leigh, not add downpours to your already rainy parade - but you should read the article kyle posted a few days ago (we’ve gone from being screwed to fucked). It will really solidy everything you just said in your last post.

So Obama is like Exxon in that regard, hasn’t actually discriminated but will not put it in writing that he won’t. Shitbag?

Kyle, thanks for the link to your older post ( I was living in a tent at the time and missed that one ). Anyway liberals aren’t really sought after in this great nation of ours. The only way Kucinich would get voted in, is if he won the war by killing Bin Laden with steak knife stabs to the chest and neck, then addressed the country in dusty camo gear with a gun in his belt.

    …and oh yeah, Justin. Hi.
