Virtual Housecleaning
After several months of procrastination, I’ve finally gone through the entire site and cleaned up the wild mess of categories that we’ve accumulated over the last four years of blogging, deleting pretty much all but the categories that have an icon assigned to them, and reassigning our 1,558 posts to an appropriate category.
For example, until today, we had a category for “Religion,” another for “Spirituality,” and another for “Philosophy.” While those three categories are different, my approach to them were all the same, namely, I waxed quixotic. Thus all the posts in those categories have been reassigned to “Waxing Quixotic.” Same goes for the categories of “TV,” “Movies,” “DVDs,” and “Videogames.” You’ll now find them all under “Mixed Media.” Etc.
As you might imagine, it would be a bit mind-numbing to go through each individual post and reassign it to a specific category. Unfortunately, with Wordpress, this is the only way to do it, which is why I’d been procrastinating the clean-up for so long. But earlier today, I found a plug-in that allows me to batch edit the categories, which makes the process about a thousand times easier. Instead of going one-by-one, I could select every post in a category and with the click of a button, assign all of them to a new category.
But even with that plug-in, the process took me about three hours to complete. Add in the time to edit some new icon images and to change the banners back to squares, and you’re talking an entire Sunday afternoon.
And while a web-master’s job is never done, I’m relieved to know this is one task I won’t have to do again.
Well, not for another four years, anyway.
