The second book has been officially selected for Nearing Mactan. For those who don’t know, Nearing Mactan (which anyone can join) is a blogging book-club community that plans on reading one book from every country on the planet. We’ve already read a book from Romania, and with the selection of the second book, we’re about to read one from Somalia. Was there a lot of dialogue and discussion related to the first book and if so, is it on the site?

There was little to no discussion on the first. I don’t want to speak for anyone else, but the first book didn’t do a thing for me: intellectually, emotionally, or spiritually. I didn’t discuss the book because the book did nothing to inspire discussion.

The first book was an anthropology book, and it was written almost like an introduction to the idea. It was more like a collection of anecdotes than anything else. While the author aimed to make the idea palatable for a popular audience, the effect didn’t have enough meat to keep me interested beyond the first 50 pages or so.

But because the next one is fiction, I have the feeling that there will be more to talk about than with the first. Either way, we’ll find out soon enough.
