Senate Can’t Decide on Language about Language

Now this pisses me off: “The Senate yesterday voted to make English the “national language” of the United States, declaring that no one has a right to federal communications or services in a language other than English except for those already guaranteed by law.” Though, after they did that, the Senate then voted to call English the “‘common unifying language of the United States,’ but mandated that nothing in that declaration ’shall diminish or expand any existing rights’ regarding multilingual services.” Apparently, the conflict between the two definitions (national language or common, unifying language) will be worked out in negotiations with the House. To see a few of the reasons why this pisses me off, read my post from a few weeks back: Immigration in Plain English
