Brazil goes crazy

Whoa. It seems that the gangs are rising up in Sao Paulo: “At least 133 people — including 40 police officers [71 gang member, 18 inmates, and 4 innocents] — have been killed since Friday night.” From the article, it sounds like the gangs attacked police stations at the same time as inmates throughout the prisons of Brazil started rioting; in other words, the gangs began a coordinated attack on the police. Which reminds me, I don’t know if you’ve seen (which is about Rio de Janeiro, not Sao Paulo), but it reveals the kind of world that this weekend’s events spring from. If you haven’t seen it, rent it tonight. It’s the film would have made if he didn’t grow up in the American suburbs, and if he actually lived the life he glamorizes. Seriously, it’s a great fuckin’ movie.

It is a great movie, and on the ifc (could be sundance) channel there is a half hour sitcomish show dealing with the same look on poverty in brazil from the view point of a couple kids. I think it is called city of men and it is made by the people. I think it is set in present day rio but as you can see not all that much has changed.
