Drop Out of the Electoral College

There’s an interesting editorial in the NY Times today about how some states are taking the iniative to drop out of the Electoral College. The iniative “proposes that states commit to casting their electoral votes for the winner of the national popular vote.” I’m not sure whether I agree with the Electoral College — I seem to remember arguing both sides during my Gov’t 101 class — but I like the idea of the states doing a little end-run on the Constitutional Amendment process. With an entrenched political machine controlling Washington (a machine whose blue and red parts are only distinguished by one’s aesthetic taste), it’s starting to look as if real change is only going to come at the state level. This is not a new realization. The Pro-Life movement, the Gay Marriage movement, the Decriminalization of Marijuana movement, and the Right to Die movements have been pursuing this strategy for years, but this is the first I’ve heard about the states trying to get around central part of the current Constitution.
